Lap Band Post-Surgery Diet

Lap Band Post-Surgery Diet

My names Nicole McGloshen and I’m the registered dietician for the Mary and Elizabeth Weight Loss Center. During our time together, we’re going to review the diet and supplement regimen that you will follow after you have had the Lap Band Surgery. So, lets jump right in. The day of surgery and the day after surgery you will be consuming thin liquids only. This includes, fruit juices, popsicles, broth, fruit ices, coffee, and tea. Now we do recommend that you avoid citrus and tomato juices. You will be intubated during this procedure. And these type of high acid juices may irritate your throat. These two days make sure you’re pushing fluids and drink throughout the day. Two days after surgery you will transition to a full creamery liquid diet. So think of liquids that you can consume with a spoon. Some examples include milk, vegetable juice, strained cream soups like cream of chicken without the chicken in it, pudding, apple sauce, cottage cheese and even yogurt. On this day you’re going restart your protein drinks. Two per day. You’re also going to restart your fiber supplement, taking one supplement twice per day. Your chewable multi vitamin and a chewable calcium supplement two times per day. One week after surgery is a big week its used as a transition week to prepare you for going back to your traditional diet. The foods that you will be consuming this week are going to be soft, tender, easily chewed foods. Think of foods like apple sauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, eggs, soft cooked noodles, fruits and vegetables without the skin that can be mashed easily, even ground meat with the sauce. During this week you will be transitioning to eating three meals per day. Make sure that you’re not consuming any beverages with your meal. And you’re delaying beverages 45-60 minutes after you eat. Set yourself up for success. This is going to be the first time that you’re eating food after your lap band surgery. You’ll be able to eat about a half a cup at a time. It may be more it may be less. But this is a really good starting point. Make sure that you’ve stopped drinking your protein shakes or any liquid meals. Two weeks after surgery you’ll resume your regular traditional diet. continue to eat three meals per day without snacks. No drinking during your meals and delay your beverages 45-60 minutes after you finished eating. Your food should be solid at this point and cause restriction on your band to help you feel full and satiated for long periods of time.
