Lap Band Pre-Surgery

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5dH7b_1-fE My names Nicole McGloshen and I’m the registered dietician for the Mary and Elizabeth Weight Loss Center. During our time together, we will review the diet and supplement regimen that you will follow beginning the Wednesday before your surgery. First step, the vitamin regimen. We recommend that you start taking one chewable multivitamin, one fiber supplement and two chewable calcium tablets each day. This regimen may help reduce the risk of any potential defiecianes or side effects. Now on to the pre-surgery diet. Most lap band surgery patients must reduce the size of their livers before they can safely have surgery. The liver shrinking diet is a low calorie, low fat and low carb diet that reduces glycogen water and fatty deposits in the liver to make it smaller. You will follow this diet from the Wednesday before surgery through the day before surgery for a total of seven days. This will make your laparoscopic surgery much easier. This pre-surgery diet includes liquids that can be consumed in any amount and as well as some that should be consumed in a specific amount. This diet also includes foods that should be consumed in specific amounts. We encourage you to consume the recommended amount of each food or liquid each day. No more no less. Let’s start by talking about the liquids that can be consumed in any amount. First water, coffee, tea. If you need a little sweetener in your coffee or tea please make sure that you’re using a low sugar substitute and as little low-fat coffee creamer as possible. You can have sugar free beverages such as, Crystal Lite, sugar free Kool-Aid, and diet sodas. Flavored water is also on the list as well as low sodium broths. Finally, sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello. Next let’s discuss liquids that you can have in moderation. Juice, such as apple, cranberry or grape as well as tomato soup that’s low fat and low sodium. You can have one cup per day that equals eight ounces. Milk or milk alternative and when I say milk alternative I am referring to nondairy products such as soy, coconut, cashew, almond milk. These options need to be as unsweetened and as low fat as possible. So, unsweetened skim, 1% or 2% You get two cups per day that total 16 ounces to add a little fun to this diet. You can have two no sugar added fudgesicles. And last but not least, high protein low carbohydrate shakes. These shakes need to be no more than 25 grams of carbohydrates. You have two options per day. The best option for you is to get the ready to drink. These can be found at your local grocery store, more than likely in the pharmacy area. Finally, let’s talk about solid foods. First up is fruit. This can be fresh, frozen, or canned. If you choose the canned option please make sure that you’re getting it in its natural liquids or in water with no sugar added. You get two choices per day. So, half a cup of canned or frozen fruit or one small piece, about the size of my fist. Again, two choices of fruit per day. Dairy Products, not including your milk option that we talked about earlier. You can have three options per day. These options include, a light yogurt, half a cup of cottage cheese or one sugar free pudding. Now let’s talk about the yogurt. Again, we want this diet to be as low carb and as low sugar as possible. So, when you’re getting these options look for ones that are using a sugar alternative stay away from ones that have fruit at the bottom or have candy bits that you can add to it. There’s a time and a place for those options and this isn’t the time. Next are non-starchy vegetables. You can have two cups of these per day and this includes things like green beans, carrots, broccoli, squash, cabbage, and many many other choices. Now we understand that this diet is light years away from what you would normally eat. Keep in mind it’s only for 7 days and it prepares you for a life changing procedure.
