What to Do Leading Up to Bariatric Surgery

What to Do Leading Up to Bariatric Surgery

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery isn’t one that many come to quickly. Besides the decision itself, there is plenty of planning before a patient undergoes surgery. Six months to a year of planning and preparation might seem excessive, but it can also determine how successful your weight loss journey will be.

6 Months to 1 Year Before Surgery

  • Attend a seminar. You can view ours online!
  • Talk to your primary care provider about your candidacy. They can provide you with a referral to an accredited bariatric surgery program.
  • You will be asked to attend nutritional classes and meetings associated with your bariatric surgery and weight loss.
  • If you are not currently exercising, a good starting goal is three times per week for 30 minutes but consult with your doctor prior to starting a new exercise routine.
  • Include plenty of healthy foods in your diet, like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and nuts.
  • Consult with a dietitian that understands bariatric diet needs. If necessary, have them make changes

2 to 4 Months Before Surgery

  • Continue regular exercise.
  • Begin to select and portion your food as you would after bariatric surgery. You should also practice chewing your food thoroughly.

4-6 Weeks Before Surgery

  • Continue regular exercise. At this point, regular exercise should be part of your routine.
  • Continue building on healthy food habits that prepare you for success for life after Lap Band Surgery.
  • Set a surgery date with your bariatric surgeon, as well as any required tests or examinations before your surgery.
  • If needed, plan to take time off work both for your surgery and recovery

1 to 2 Weeks Before Surgery

  • Your bariatric surgeon will meet with you to review results from medical tests and evaluations. They will also guide you on preparations for the day of your surgery.
  • Continue to focus on eating healthy foods and exercising regularly.
  • Depending on your specific surgery and needs, your bariatric team will provide preoperative instructions to help you prepare for surgery.

2 to 3 Days Before Surgery

  • Be sure to ask your bariatric surgeon and/or nutrition team any questions and concerns about your surgery.
  • Immediately after your surgery, your diet will be strategic. Stock your home with foods as recommended by your bariatric team.

24 Hours Before Surgery

Follow your bariatric surgeon’s instructions to the letter, especially when it comes to eating and drinking right before your surgery.

Day of Weight Loss Surgery

Double-check that you have everything you need before you leave: a change of clothing, medications you might need, paperwork, etc. Pay close attention to any final instructions given to you by your bariatric team.
